Kuzhipanniyaaram (Rice Cake Pops)

This is a chettinaad delicacy............

Raw Rice - 1 cup (Sona Masoori Rice)
Boiled Rice - 1 cup (Idly Rice)
Urad Dal - 1/2 cup
Fenugreek Seeds - 1 tbsp
Salt  - as needed
Kuzhipanniyaaram Pan / Electric Cake Pop maker

Soak all the ingredients together for a minimum of 2 hours and grind it like idli batter. Add salt and let it ferment overnight.
Heat the Kuzhipanniyaram Pan / electric cake pop maker, coat it with a cooking spray and pour
little batter in each of the spaces and pour 1 tbsp oil on every kuzhipanniyaaram. When one side is cooked, turn it over, pour another tsp of oil on each one of them and cook. Once done, it is ready to eat . I use our traditional wooden stick to turn them over, but you can also use a fork.

You can enjoy this kuzhipanniyaaram in a traditional way like this ............... when you heat the pan,
pour 1 tsp of oil into each space and then pour the batter. Also, when you turn it over, pour 1 tsp of oil on each and cook. Tooooo Yummmmmyyyy..... BUT.... TOOOOOO OILY...... and TOOO much CALORIES ...

There is a special chutney which will be a good combination to these Kuzhipaniyaarams, for which
I will be posting the recipe soon.....

Pillayar Nombu ellai maavu

Pillayar Nombu is celebrated in honour of God Pillayar  (Ganesha) by the Chettiars  on the 21st day after the Thirukkaarthigai Deepam, when Sashti Thithi and Sadayam (also called Shatabhisha) Nakshathra come on the same day. In US, it comes on Dec 26th, 2014. To make the ellai maavu , you will need Raw Rice - 1 cup Jaggery grated - 1/2 cup To prepare the rice flour, first soak the rice in water for 2 to 3 hours. Then drain the water and spread it on a paper towel or white cloth and let it dry for 20 minutes. Now, the when the rice is still wet, grind it in a mixie , into a powder. Sieve it and collect the coarse powder and grind it again and seive it. Repeat this until very less coarse powder is left.                                     In a pan, put the jaggery and add 2 tbsp of water and heat it until the jaggery dissolves completely. Now, sieve it in a tea strainer and collect the jaggery syrup. It should neither be too thick nor too thin.

Significance of Pillayar Nonbu

Pillayar nombu is a nombu celebrated exclusively by Naattukkottai Nagarathars. This post is intended for young chettiar couples living far from their families, who want to know about this nonbu and celebrate it at home. The significance of performing this nombu, is that we pray to Lord Ganesha, requesting him to remove all the obstacles in our life.  I have heard that there are 3 versions of the story behind this nonbu. I am sharing the one that my mom has told me... A teenage girl was ill-treated by her step-mother. On karthigai deepam day, this step-mother's diamond ring was missing and she accused this girl of stealing her ring. This girl went to a pillayar temple and prayed to Lord Ganesha that she will prove herself as innocent and find the ring. So she started saying her prayers to Lord Ganesha, by removing one thread a day from her cotton saree for 21 days. She promised to the God that, when she proves her innocence, she will make the number of threads she has on that day as

Whole Wheat Bread Without Yeast

My Recipe for today is Whole Wheat Bread without yeast / Pain sans levure  !  When I ordered my groceries this time, bread was not available at the store.  So, I thought of baking bread with the ingredients I had at home.  This is the first time ever I am trying baking a small loaf of bread and I did not have a loaf pan either. So, I have used a square container which measures 4 cups. If you have a loaf pan, please use that, but the measurements i have given below will not be enough to make the size of a store bought loaf and the baked loaf will be upto 3/4th of the loaf pan.  You will need the following ingredients that will be easily available at home. Wheat flour - 2 cups, leveled ( I used the normal wheat flour, that I use to make chapathi at home) Baking Soda - 1/4 tsp Baking Powder - 1/2 tsp Whole Milk - 6 tbsp + 2 tbsp + a little for brushing at the end Water - 6 tbsp Sugar - 1 tbsp ( I did not use powdered sugar) Yogurt - 1/4 cup, nicely beaten (I used homemade thick and creamy
