Vaazhaippoo vadai is a chettinad dish. It is a good side dish for curd rice, sambhar rice, or even as a healthy evening snack. The main ingredient is Banana Flower.
Ingredients:
Banana Flower - 1 no.(small)(deveined and chopped)
Red gram(Thuvaram Paruppu)- 1/4 cup Bengal Gram (Kadalai Paruppu)-1/4 cup Fennel Seeds (Perunjeeragam) - 1 tbsp Cumin Seeds (Jeeragam) - 1 tsp
Red Chillies (Kaindha Millagai) - 4 nos. Ginger(chopped) - 2 tbsp
Curry leaves(Murraya Koenigii)(chopped) - 2 sticks leaves
Cilantro chopped - 1/4 cup
Salt to taste
Oil (for deep frying) / (shallow frying in skillet) - as per your requirement
1. Soak the grams along with fennel seeds,cumin seeds and red chillies for 2 hours.
2. Grind the soaked ingredients and the chopped banana flower and chopped ginger, into a coarse paste, without adding much water.
3. Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan , and put mustard. After it crackles, add asafoetida and chopped curry leaves. Then add onion and saute.
4. Now, add the sauted onion mix into the ground mixture . Also add chopped coriander leaves in it.
5. Heat oil in a skillet . Make round patties of the mixture and arrange in the skillet .Pour 1 tsp oil on the patties. Cook on both sides. This way of preparation consumes less oil and is thus healthy.
6. Alternatively, you can also deep fry these patties, which is the traditional way. They will surely taste better.
