Sweet Poli

Sweet Poli

Since i am updating my blog after a long time, i thought it would be good to start with a sweet dish "SWEET POLI". Though there are many ways for preparing this recipe, this  is my way of preparing Poli.
The Ingredients required are :
All Purpose Flour - 3 cups
Warm Water - 2 1/4 cups
Channa Dal - 1 cup
Jaggery - 1 cup ( grated )
Cooking Oil - 4 tbsp
Cardamom - 3 or 4 (crushed after removing the skin)

Now, let's see how to prepare :

1. Put the all purpose flour, salt , warm water and 2 tbsp oil  and make into a dough. The dough
consisterncy is a little softer than chapathi dough. The proportion of water and flour which i have
given will be correct for the consistency. Pour 2 tbsp oil again and spread it over the dough, keep
   aside for 2 hours.

2.  Pressure cook the channa dal for 5 minutes , drain the excess water and cool it.
Now, add the grated jaggery to the cold  cooked dal and grind them together .
Do not add water for grinding.

3. Now, put this dal mix in a non stick pan , in low heat . Keep stirring it often , so that the excess
water dries up. This will help us to store the poli for more days. Then make medium size balls
    from this dal jaggery mix.

Our stuffing balls are ready!!

4.  Make small balls from the dough. Take 2 balls and flatten them into small circles. On one small
chapathi, spread one ball of stuffing, place another small chapathi on the spreaded chapathi.
     See the photo...

5. Heat a tawa and cook these stuffed chapathis on both sides by adding oil till golden brown spots
    occur.

Hot Sweet Polis are ready to eat ...... hmmmm.... yummy ....

You can eat it hot or even the next day. My son enjoys eating the stuffing balls and calls it ladoo :)

Enjoy the Sweet Polis and post your comments ...

Significance of Pillayar Nonbu

Pillayar nombu is a nombu celebrated exclusively by Naattukkottai Nagarathars. This post is intended for young chettiar couples living far from their families, who want to know about this nonbu and celebrate it at home. The significance of performing this nombu, is that we pray to Lord Ganesha, requesting him to remove all the obstacles in our life.  I have heard that there are 3 versions of the story behind this nonbu. I am sharing the one that my mom has told me... A teenage girl was ill-treated by her step-mother. On karthigai deepam day, this step-mother's diamond ring was missing and she accused this girl of stealing her ring. This girl went to a pillayar temple and prayed to Lord Ganesha that she will prove herself as innocent and find the ring. So she started saying her prayers to Lord Ganesha, by removing one thread a day from her cotton saree for 21 days. She promised to the God that, when she proves her innocence, she will make the number of threads she has on that day as

Whole Wheat Bread Without Yeast

My Recipe for today is Whole Wheat Bread without yeast / Pain sans levure  !  When I ordered my groceries this time, bread was not available at the store.  So, I thought of baking bread with the ingredients I had at home.  This is the first time ever I am trying baking a small loaf of bread and I did not have a loaf pan either. So, I have used a square container which measures 4 cups. If you have a loaf pan, please use that, but the measurements i have given below will not be enough to make the size of a store bought loaf and the baked loaf will be upto 3/4th of the loaf pan.  You will need the following ingredients that will be easily available at home. Wheat flour - 2 cups, leveled ( I used the normal wheat flour, that I use to make chapathi at home) Baking Soda - 1/4 tsp Baking Powder - 1/2 tsp Whole Milk - 6 tbsp + 2 tbsp + a little for brushing at the end Water - 6 tbsp Sugar - 1 tbsp ( I did not use powdered sugar) Yogurt - 1/4 cup, nicely beaten (I used homemade thick and creamy

Pillayar Nombu ellai maavu

Pillayar Nombu is celebrated in honour of God Pillayar  (Ganesha) by the Chettiars  on the 21st day after the Thirukkaarthigai Deepam, when Sashti Thithi and Sadayam (also called Shatabhisha) Nakshathra come on the same day. In US, it comes on Dec 26th, 2014. To make the ellai maavu , you will need Raw Rice - 1 cup Jaggery grated - 1/2 cup To prepare the rice flour, first soak the rice in water for 2 to 3 hours. Then drain the water and spread it on a paper towel or white cloth and let it dry for 20 minutes. Now, the when the rice is still wet, grind it in a mixie , into a powder. Sieve it and collect the coarse powder and grind it again and seive it. Repeat this until very less coarse powder is left.                                     In a pan, put the jaggery and add 2 tbsp of water and heat it until the jaggery dissolves completely. Now, sieve it in a tea strainer and collect the jaggery syrup. It should neither be too thick nor too thin.
