Significance of Pillayar Nonbu

Pillayar nombu is a nombu celebrated exclusively by Naattukkottai Nagarathars. This post is intended for young chettiar couples living far from their families, who want to know about this nonbu and celebrate it at home. The significance of performing this nombu, is that we pray to Lord Ganesha, requesting him to remove all the obstacles in our life.  I have heard that there are 3 versions of the story behind this nonbu. I am sharing the one that my mom has told me... A teenage girl was ill-treated by her step-mother. On karthigai deepam day, this step-mother's diamond ring was missing and she accused this girl of stealing her ring. This girl went to a pillayar temple and prayed to Lord Ganesha that she will prove herself as innocent and find the ring. So she started saying her prayers to Lord Ganesha, by removing one thread a day from her cotton saree for 21 days. She promised to the God that, when she proves her innocence, she will make the number of threads she has on that day as...

Soft Mysore Pak

Hi all, Today, I am going to share my recipe for a soft and silky smooth Mysore Pak.  Ingredients needed: Gram Flour / Kadalai Maavu / Besan - 1/2 cup (sifted) Sugar - 1 cup Whole Milk - 1/2 cup Oil - 1/2 cup ( I used Canola oil, but you can use any oil, which doesn't have a strong flavor or aroma by itself. For example, do not use Sesame Oil, Coconut oil, Mustards Oil, Groundnut Oil, etc) Clarified Butter / Nei / Ghee - 1/4 cup ( it should not be melted, it should be at room temperature. If it is in a liquid state, keep in the refridgerator for 15 mintues  and whisk it a little before using in the recipe.) Please follow the steps exactly to obtain best results. Use a thick bottomed and wide mouth pan. In the pan, add the following ingredients one by one. Please note!! I have not asked you to switch on the stove yet! So now, add the flour and milk and mix well without lumps. I prefer to use a whisk for mixing. Then switch on the stove in a medium flame and keep the pan ...

Whole Wheat Bread Without Yeast

My Recipe for today is Whole Wheat Bread without yeast / Pain sans levure  !  When I ordered my groceries this time, bread was not available at the store.  So, I thought of baking bread with the ingredients I had at home.  This is the first time ever I am trying baking a small loaf of bread and I did not have a loaf pan either. So, I have used a square container which measures 4 cups.
